Shopify Cart Drawer Guide: Features and Setup

Learn how a Shopify cart drawer works, which features to look for, and what to test when you add one to your store.

A Shopify cart drawer is a panel that slides in from the side of the page. Shoppers can check their items, change quantities, and see the subtotal without leaving the product or collection they were browsing.

When you choose a drawer, start with the basics: can a customer read the product details, change the order, and find checkout? Offers and shipping messages should fit around those tasks.

What should a Shopify cart drawer include?

Each item needs an image, product and variant names, price, quantity controls, and a way to remove it. The subtotal should update when the cart changes, and the checkout button should be easy to find.

You may also want an order note, a discount-code field, or a free-shipping progress bar. Add the tools your customers use, and check that they leave enough room for the items and checkout button.

  • Readable product and variant details
  • Keyboard-accessible quantity and remove controls
  • An accurate subtotal after every change
  • An easy-to-find checkout button
  • A way to keep shopping when the cart is empty

Make the drawer easy to use on desktop and mobile

When an item is added, show it in the cart and keep the shopper's place on the page. Make the close button visible. Avoid hiding totals in extra panels or placing several competing buttons beside checkout.

Try the drawer on a phone. You should be able to scroll through the items and reach checkout without struggling. Test long product names, several items, discounts, and a failed cart update as well as a simple one-item order.

How free-shipping goals work inside the drawer

Set a cart amount for the free-shipping goal. The drawer shows how much more the shopper needs to add, then updates the message when the cart reaches that amount.

The progress bar does not create a shipping rate. Configure free shipping in Shopify separately and make sure the goal matches. Check country, currency, and product exclusions, and explain any conditions in your shipping policy.

How to evaluate a Shopify cart drawer app

After installation, test on a duplicate theme or development store. Add and remove products, change quantities, enter a note or discount code, and check any gift rules. Continue to checkout to confirm the order still looks right.

  • Theme app embed installation without manual theme-code edits
  • Cart updates and checkout that work with your theme
  • Settings for colors, position, messages, and offers
  • Controls that work with a keyboard as well as a mouse or touch screen
  • Reports on drawer opens, product offers, and checkout clicks

Before you launch

Choose your accent color, check your shipping message, and pick a product offer if you want one. Test the drawer on desktop and mobile before turning it on for customers. After launch, review drawer opens, offer activity, and checkout clicks alongside Shopify's order reports.

Dool Cart includes these settings in its Shopify cart drawer. Visit the homepage to compare features and plans, or open the Shopify App Store listing to try it on your store.
