How to Add a Free Gift with Purchase on Shopify

Set up a Shopify free gift with purchase, choose a sensible threshold, and test automatic gifts in Dool Cart before you launch your offer to customers.

To add a free gift with purchase on Shopify, you need a rule for who qualifies and a way to get the gift into the cart. Shopify's built-in Buy X get Y discounts can make a qualifying item free. Dool Cart can also add your selected gift automatically when the cart reaches a spending threshold.

Start with an offer you can explain in one sentence. For example: 'Get a free travel pouch with $75 in products before discounts.' The amount and product are hypothetical, but the decisions are the same for your store: choose the gift, check the cost, and test what happens when someone changes their order.

Choose how customers will receive the gift

With a native Shopify Buy X get Y promotion, customers must add both the qualifying products and the gift to their cart. An automatic discount changes the eligible item's price; it does not add that item for them. If you use this option, your promotion needs to tell shoppers which product to add.

Dool Cart's free-gift feature adds one selected gift through the cart drawer when the cart qualifies. This suits a simple spending-threshold offer where you have already chosen the gift. Customers do not choose from a gift catalog in the drawer.

Pick a gift you can afford to send

Choose something that fits the purchase and is easy to fulfill. A small pouch could suit a travel-accessory store. A sample might suit a store whose customers want to try another product. A bulky item that changes the package size can make an otherwise inexpensive gift costly to ship.

Work out the cost before setting the threshold. Include the gift's purchase cost, packing materials, added handling, and any extra postage. Check the profit left on a qualifying order after your usual discounts. The gift's retail price is not the amount it costs your business.

Confirm the exact variant you will send, including its size or color, and check its inventory. Use a gift you can keep available for the duration of the offer. If stock runs low, change or stop the offer before promoting it again.

Set up the free gift in Dool Cart

Free gifts are available on Dool Cart's Growth and Scale plans. Make sure the Dool Cart drawer is enabled on the theme you are testing, then open the app in Shopify admin.

  • Open Settings and find Free gift.
  • Turn on Enable free gift.
  • Click Choose gift product, select the product, and check the selected variant shown in Settings.
  • Enter a positive amount in Gift threshold, using the store currency shown beside the field. For the hypothetical US-dollar offer above, enter 75.00.
  • Click Save in the save bar and wait for confirmation that the settings were saved.

Confirm the checkout discount activated

Saving the gift settings also sets up Dool Cart's automatic Cart Drawer Rewards discount. The gift needs that checkout discount to become free. Seeing a selected product in Settings is not enough to confirm the offer is ready.

If Shopify cannot activate the checkout discounts, Dool Cart reports an error and keeps the gift and upsell offers off. Resolve the error and save again before announcing the promotion. Once saving succeeds, build a qualifying cart and continue to checkout. Confirm the correct gift appears with a zero price.

If you also use a Dool Cart upsell, select a different variant for that offer. Settings does not allow the same variant to serve as both the upsell and the free gift.

Understand which amount earns the gift

Dool Cart checks the original, pre-discount subtotal of the other products in the drawer. The gift does not count toward its own threshold. Shipping and taxes are not part of that product subtotal.

For the $75 example, $70 of qualifying product value plus a gift with a $10 retail price does not reach the threshold. A shopper needs $75 of the other products. When that amount falls below the threshold after an item is removed, the drawer removes the gift. If the cart qualifies again, it adds the selected gift back.

Keep the wording of your promotion consistent with that rule. If you offer both a gift and free shipping, check each threshold separately. Reaching the gift threshold does not itself create a free-shipping rate.

Test the threshold in both directions

Use a test store or your theme preview before launching. Run the same checks on a phone as well as a desktop. For our hypothetical $75 offer, these are the cart states to inspect:

Example checks for a $75 gift threshold in a USD store
Cart changeWhat to check
Other products total $74.99The gift is absent.
Other products reach $75.00One selected gift is added.
Increase the cart above $75.00The gift quantity stays at one.
Remove a product and drop below $75.00The gift is removed.
Add products to reach $75.00 againOne gift returns.
Continue to checkout while qualifiedThe correct gift is free.

Check discount codes and inventory before launch

Repeat the checkout test with the discount codes you actually promote. Since drawer eligibility uses the pre-discount product subtotal, the displayed total after a code can be below your gift threshold. Check both the gift and the final amount due; do not assume every combination of promotions will behave the same way.

Test the selected gift's availability, too. Confirm it can be added from the storefront and that fulfillment staff can identify the correct variant. If the gift does not appear, check the saved settings, product availability, threshold, and discount activation before changing the offer.

Keep the offer clear after it goes live

Name the gift and spending requirement wherever you promote it. Keep screenshots and promotional copy up to date when you change the product or threshold. Stop advertising an offer you have switched off.

Review completed orders in Shopify to check gift discounts and the cost of fulfilling them. Dool Cart's gift-add activity can show that gifts were added to carts, but an added gift does not mean a customer completed an order. Use the order results to decide whether to keep the offer, change the threshold, or try another gift.
