How to Add a Free-Shipping Bar to Your Shopify Cart

Add a free-shipping progress bar to your Shopify cart, match it to your shipping rates, and test the message before customers see it.

A customer has $58 in their cart. Your store offers free shipping at $75. A message saying they're $17 away gives them something useful to decide: add another item or check out with what they already have.

A Shopify free-shipping bar displays that progress as the cart changes. In Dool Cart, it appears inside the cart drawer, beside the order the shopper is reviewing. You set the amount and the progress message. Shopify's shipping settings still control the shipping charge at checkout.

1. Choose a threshold your store can afford

The $75 goal in this guide is a hypothetical example in US dollars. Choose your own amount from your order history and costs. Look at what customers usually spend, how much you earn after product costs, and what you pay to ship an order.

Check a few real baskets near your proposed threshold. Subtract product cost, payment fees, packing, and shipping from the amount collected. A heavier extra item can raise your shipping cost enough to change the result. If you also offer a gift, include its cost.

Average order value is a useful starting point, but a few expensive orders can pull it upward. Look at typical baskets too. Pick an amount customers can reasonably reach with products they want, then review the profit left on those orders.

2. Set up the free-shipping rate in Shopify

Open Settings > Shipping and delivery in Shopify. For stores using shipping profiles, open the relevant profile and edit the shipping option for the zone you serve. Shopify's current instructions include an Offer free shipping option where you enter the minimum order amount. Save the change.

Check which products and destinations that option covers. A US-only offer needs those conditions explained to shoppers. Shopify is moving some stores to shipping options by market, so follow the instructions for the setup shown in your admin.

Adding a goal in Dool Cart does not create or change this rate. Finish the shipping setup before you show customers a free-shipping promise.

3. Enter the matching goal in Dool Cart

Open Dool Cart from your Shopify apps, choose Settings, and find the Free shipping section. Enter your amount in Threshold. The field shows the currency used for the setting. For the US-dollar example, enter 75.00.

In Progress message, keep {{amount}} wherever the remaining spend should appear. For example: You're {{amount}} away from free shipping. Dool Cart replaces that placeholder with the amount still needed when it displays the drawer.

Use the Save bar to save your changes. Open your storefront, add a product, and open the drawer to check the result. If Dool Cart's drawer is not enabled on your theme yet, follow the cart drawer setup guide first.

4. Keep the message short and accurate

The shopper needs the remaining amount and any condition that affects the offer. Avoid filling the drawer with a paragraph of promotional copy. Keep the checkout button and product controls easy to find on a phone.

Progress message controls the text before the goal is reached. Once the cart reaches the goal, Dool Cart uses its built-in translated confirmation message; there is no separate goal-reached message field in Settings.

The bar uses one configured threshold. It does not check the customer's delivery address or reproduce every shipping rule. If your store has destination or product restrictions, check that the drawer's message is appropriate across the carts you serve. Hide the bar if it would promise an offer you cannot honor.

5. Test the cart and checkout together

Use ordinary products without discounts for the first pass. In this example, the shipping rate and drawer goal are both $75 USD. Start a fresh checkout for each case and enter a delivery address that qualifies for the offer.

6. Repeat the test with discounts and gifts

Dool Cart calculates progress from the final line prices in the cart and excludes items marked as Dool Cart gifts. The bar can therefore use a different amount from a simple sum of the original product prices.

Shopify checks price-based shipping rates against the discounted cart total before taxes. Try your actual discount codes and automatic offers, then compare the drawer with checkout. A passing test without discounts does not prove that every combination works.

If you sell in more than one currency, test each one you offer. Dool Cart uses one configured threshold; it does not convert the threshold for each currency. Check the displayed amount and the final shipping rate before enabling the bar for those shoppers.

If the bar is missing or the amounts disagree

Check Threshold first. Setting it to 0 hides the progress bar. If you entered a positive amount, confirm that you saved the settings and enabled the drawer on the theme you are viewing. Dool Cart's bar appears inside its drawer; it does not add a banner across your site's header.

If the remaining amount looks wrong, check the currency, discounted item prices, and any gift in the basket. If the drawer says the goal is reached but checkout charges shipping, review the shipping option and its conditions. Keep the bar hidden until the message agrees with the offer customers can actually receive.

Review completed orders after launch

Watch whether customers place larger orders and how much those orders cost to fulfill. Compare shipping spend and profit alongside average order value. Keep track of other changes, such as a sale or a new traffic source, that could affect the numbers.

Dool Cart's cart activity reports include checkout clicks. Use Shopify's order reports for completed sales, and your fulfillment costs to judge whether the free-shipping offer is affordable. Recheck the drawer whenever you change the shipping threshold or run a new promotion.
