Shopify Cart Upsell: 9 Tips for Choosing Useful Offers
Choose a product for your Shopify cart upsell, work out the discount, and check how the offer behaves before customers see it.
A Shopify cart upsell shows a product offer while a shopper reviews their cart. In a cart drawer, they can add the product from beside the order summary without opening another page.
The product should make sense for your customers, and the price should leave enough profit for your store. Here are nine things to check when setting up an offer.
1. Make the offer complement the cart
Choose something customers might need with their purchase: a care kit for footwear, a refill for a device, or a matching accessory. They should be able to see why you are suggesting it.
Start with one product and review how customers respond. Dool Cart lets you choose one offer for the drawer, so pick an item that fits the products your store sells.
2. Keep the price proportionate
Compare the offer price with what customers usually spend. A small accessory may be an easier addition than an expensive item that needs more research. Show enough product information for the shopper to decide from the drawer.
3. Protect margin before adding a discount
Before offering a discount, add up product cost, payment fees, packing, shipping, and likely returns. Consider whether you would be discounting an item customers already buy at full price.
You can start without a discount. If you add one, check the final price in Shopify checkout and review the profit left on the sale, not just how many times the product was added.
4. Explain the offer in plain language
- Show the product name and image
- Display the final price and discount clearly
- Use one direct add-to-cart action
- Avoid countdowns or scarcity claims unless they are accurate
5. Check what happens when the offer is added
Add the offer and check that the item, subtotal, discounts, and shipping progress all update. The drawer should show that the request is being processed and avoid adding the product twice if a customer clicks again.
6. Do not block checkout
Keep checkout visible beside the offer. Customers should be able to place their original order without accepting the extra product or closing a promotion first.
7. Test the full discount and checkout path
Add the offer, change quantities, remove items, and try any other discount codes your store uses. Then continue to checkout. Check that the product and final price match what the drawer showed.
8. Review cart activity and completed orders
Cart reports can show whether shoppers notice and add an offer. Dool Cart tracks cart activity, including checkout clicks; it does not report completed orders or attribute revenue to the offer. Use Shopify order reports to check sales, discounts, and returns.
- Offer views: how often the recommendation was shown
- Upsell adds: how often the product was added from the offer
- Add rate: product adds divided by offer views
- Checkout clicks: how often shoppers continued toward checkout
- Shopify order reports: completed sales, discounts, and returns
9. Review and refresh the offer
Check the offer when your stock, prices, or main products change. Replace unavailable items and give a new offer enough time to collect useful data before judging it from a few visits.
On Growth and Scale, Dool Cart includes one product offer with an optional percentage discount and a free gift at a cart threshold you choose. All plans include free-shipping progress and cart analytics, with different reporting periods.
